A joint meeting has been arranged between the Thames Valley Branch of the CIArb, RIBA South / South East & RICS South

The building industry is famous for taking everyday issues and exploiting them. A learned panel will address problems submitted to them on any relevant subject:

  • Tony Bingham - Barrister - LLB(Hons), FCIArb, FCIOB, FASI, MRICS, MInstCES
  • Nigel Harley - Surveyor - LLB(Hons), LLM, MSc, Dip Adj, Dip Arb, MRICS, FCIOB, FCIArb
  • Christopher Smart- Architect - Dip Arch RIBA MSc FCIArb

Delegates are invited to e-mail in their construction practice and law queries to be addressed by this experienced panel of construction professionals. Matters can range from valuation to architecture to professional appointments, such as:

  • Can I issue a negative certificate?
  • If the contractor prices something low, can I order 10 times more?
  • If an architect is named as the QS under the contract, what standards must he display?
  • Can I renegotiate my percentage fees if the client halves the size of the job?

These are just examples - you can dictate the subjects to be raised.

Tony Bingham was previously a QS and a builder and is now a barrister, adjudicator, arbitrator and mediator. He has been a practising barrister for 21 years and has written a popular legal column in the Building Magazine for the last 28 years.

Nigel Harley started at 16 on a building site and rose to be a director of a national contracting company. He is now Head of Legal Services at Thomas Sands where he advises employers, contractors and subcontractors on construction contracts. He is a practising expert witness and Adjudicator

Christopher Smart is a practising arbitrator, adjudicator and expert witness architect. He combined 25 years of professional practice with 14 years of legal involvement. He is an RIBA professional examiner and is currently Chairman of the Western Counties Branch of the CIArb.
