A joint meeting has been arranged between the Thames Valley Branch of the CIArb and the Thames Valley Branch of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Gordon Bateman & John Done are speaking on the subject:

Why arbitrate or adjudicate when you can mediate?

(An outline of the essentials of alternative dispute resolution, both binding and non-binding)

Arbitration, adjudication, expert determination, mediation and conciliation: All share the same advantage of confidentiality and privacy for the parties. Yet each has differences from the others.

The speakers will explore the advantages and the merits of each of these alternative dispute resolution techniques and contrast them to reveal why each has a place in the field of dispute resolution.

Gordon Bateman CEng, FICE, FCIArb, AMIChemE is a lecturer and consultant in private practice, providing training courses in the UK and overseas on contract law and on forms of contracts and their management – focussing in particular on the IChemE and FIDIC forms. He also advises on the drafting of contracts incorporating such forms. He chairs the Institution of Chemical Engineers’ Contracts Committee, and is a Past Chairman of the Thames Valley Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

John Done CEng, FICE is a chartered civil engineer and an ADR Group accredited mediator with wide experience of construction with contractors in UK, of contract management with consultants in Pakistan, Africa, the Middle East and UK and of personnel management in UK.
