The Rising Demand for Alternatives to University: A Challenge to the Conventional Wisdom

Date: Thursday, 21 May 2026, 19:00 Location: Thames Lido, Napier Road, Reading, RG1 8FR Member cost: £0 (including VAT) Non-member cost: £0 (including VAT)

Rising tuition fees, the cost of university accommodation, and the impact of COVID-19 are just some of the factors which have reshaped attitudes towards the ‘traditional’ university route among school leavers.

As a result, demand for alternative pathways into professional careers — including degree apprenticeships — is growing. While some sectors have embraced these routes for years, others are only now beginning to do so. Despite their clear benefits, there remains significant scope for improvement to deliver better outcomes for both employers and apprentices.

This talk will explore the limited accessibility of degree apprenticeships, the importance of being honest about the realities facing young people, and the use — and misuse — of AI in early-career recruitment.

Amaya Ahmed I am a 19-year-old degree apprentice for Colliers International, driven by a passion for property and purposeful change. As the Founder of HerEstate, I work to open doors for young people, especially women, by amplifying access, representation, and opportunity within the property industry, using my voice to inspire others to step forward with ambition.

Elizabeth Joseph-Adigun I am the Founder of HerEstate Network, expanding access and opportunity for young women in the property sector. As a public speaker on equity and youth advancement, I also challenge systems and advocate for access regarding youth and women. Alongside this, I am also a degree apprentice Site Manager. My goal is to build spaces and break societal labelled ceilings simultaneously.

Cost: There is no charge for this event. Guests and non-members are most welcome, but registration must be made online via.
