HMRC: Forewarned is forearmed!

The increasingly aggressive approach of HMRC to ordinary businesses and Directors

•             CIS, security for VAT, Money laundering, Labour Providers and due diligence

•             Understanding HMRC’s use of VAT Assessments and Penalties

•             Are you or your company an easy target?

•             How can a Director can be personally liable for company wrongdoing penalties?

•             Is HMRC Judge, Jury and executioner?

And for some light relief….

•             The perils of doing a professional favour for free – Could you still be sued?

As we know, the Government and therefore HMRC is under relentless pressure to bring in more and more tax, and to stamp out supposed evasion and avoidance. HMRC has been given specific budget to target high risk areas of the economy, and continues to lobby for increases to its powers. Construction is one of those areas.

HMRC is toughening its approach in respect of non-compliance and can deploy a full arsenal of powers in areas such as VAT that can have serious financial implications for companies in the construction industry and their directors. When compared to HMRC’s treatment of large multinationals, the way it sometimes treats normal UK companies may seem harsh. Be warned.

A seminar by

Anthony Galvin

 FCIArb, Dip Adj, Barrister

Anthony Galvin is a Barrister as well as an owner and Director of Altion Law Limited, a commercial law firm specialising (amongst other things) in construction law and disputes with HMRC. Anthony was called to the Bar in 2003 but rather than practise at the Bar, began working for a well-established construction consultancy, before becoming in-house counsel for part of one of the world’s largest insurance and private healthcare groups.  Anthony then set up his own legal consultancy specialising in construction disputes and HMRC matters before founding Altion Law Limited with his business partner in 2013.  Altion Law Limited was one of the first of the new type of law firms, known as Alternative Business Structures, allowing different professionals to own and direct a law firm.

Within Altion Law, Anthony continues to specialise in the areas of construction and HMRC, and also continues to perform his in house counsel role within one of the world’s largest insurance and private healthcare groups, giving his advice (and that of Altion Law) a wider commercial aspect and realism.
